At CA Tampa, we begin each year by humbling ourselves through 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. We do this to position our hearts to hear from God, to seek His will, and to walk in spiritual authority. As we step into the new year, we believe God has something powerful He desires to pour out on our church, our city, and our lives — if we will seek Him first.

“While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said…” (Acts 13:2)

Why Prayer & Fasting Matters Expand

Fasting isn't just abstaining from food—it's an intentional time of spiritual focus. When we fast and pray, we create space for breakthrough, clarity, healing, and transformation. Fasting prepares us for what God has ordained us to do.

As Wesley Duewel said: "Fasting is just as biblical and normal a part of a spiritual walk of obedience with God as prayer, Bible reading, or assembling with God’s children."

Why Should I Fast? Expand

Here are seven biblical reasons for fasting:

  1. To prepare for ministry (Matthew 4:1-17)
  2. To seek God’s wisdom (Acts 14:23)
  3. To show grief (Nehemiah 1:1-4)
  4. To seek protection (Ezra 8:21-23)
  5. To repent (Jonah 3:10)
  6. To gain victory (Judges 20:26)
  7. To worship God (Luke 2:37)
Recommended Fasting Options Expand

Option 1: Full Fast - Fast from all solid food. Drink water, juice, or broths for 21 days.

Option 2: Progressive Fast

  • Week 1: Full fast (water, juice, broths).
  • Week 2: One meal per day (e.g. fast until 6PM).
  • Week 3: Fast one meal per day with focused prayer.

Option 3: Partial Fast / Altered Diet

  • One or two meals per day.
  • Or participate in a Daniel Fast (vegetables only).
  • Or fast from something you rely on: social media, TV, spending, etc.

Note: If you have medical conditions or a history of disordered eating, we encourage you to seek guidance and prayerfully consider what kind of fast is appropriate.

How to Prepare Expand

Spiritually:

  • Spend time in confession and repentance.
  • Invite the Holy Spirit to show you areas of growth.
  • Meditate on passages like Psalm 100, Matthew 6, Philippians 4:9.

Mentally & Emotionally:

  • Be aware of emotional triggers that may arise.
  • Journal or pray through moments of anger, fear, or anxiety.

Physically:

  • Hydrate.
  • Eat clean before the fast begins.
  • Ease slowly back into eating after the fast.

Practically:

  • Plan your prayer schedule (morning, midday, and evening).
  • Inform close family members.
  • Set aside times and locations for devotion and prayer.
What to Expect While Fasting Expand
  • Hunger will serve as a reminder to pray.
  • Fatigue and headaches may occur early in the fast.
  • Emotional sensitivity may increase—lean into the Holy Spirit's refining work.
  • Breakthrough is coming.
How Should I Pray During the Fast? Expand

Morning: Seek God's voice and guidance for the day.
Midday: Reflect on His presence and activity.
Evening: Thank Him for what He's revealed.

"Prayer is our first response, not our last resort."

Final Thoughts

We believe we will only see the power of the Gospel unleashed when the Church returns to prayer and fasting. God is calling CA Tampa to step into new territory—to reclaim what the enemy tried to steal, to walk in divine authority, and to declare the name of Jesus boldly.

Let the season of 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting be a catalyst for your spiritual life.

“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine...” (Ephesians 3:20)

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)
